SPRINGFIELD, Ill – State Rep. Sonya Harper, D-Chicago, supported legislation to strengthen public transit across Illinois and Chicago, ultimately creating jobs, supporting riders, and driving economic growth.
“For years, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has been the backbone of our city’s transportation system,” Harper said. “Their different lines may appear to some people as just names of colors, but for millions of people across our state who rely on public transportation to navigate the city, they play a pivotal role in getting riders to and from work, doctor’s appointments, and in supporting our state’s economic growth as a whole.”
Senate Bill 2111 is a significant effort to modernize and strengthen Illinois’ public transit system. The legislation creates the Northern Illinois Transit Authority (NITA), a new agency designed to make transit simpler, more efficient, and more connected across the region. NITA will bring the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Pace, and Metra under one system to improve service for riders. It will also take over regional planning from the current Regional Transit Authority (RTA), setting standards for service, fares, and long-term investments, while increasing accountability and transparency.
This legislation is especially significant for Harper, who, along with Senator Mattie Hunter, worked tirelessly with local community organizations to ensure that the reopening of the 63rd Street Green Line station was included in the bill.
“Residents statewide can breathe a sigh of relief,” Harper said. “We’ve found an innovative way to provide communities with safe, reliable transportation so people can carry out their daily tasks, which are vital to their everyday lives.”
