SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Camille Y. Lilly, D-Chicago, backed legislation to strengthen public transit across Illinois and Chicago, creating jobs, improving service for riders, and boosting economic growth.

“At the heart of our city’s transportation system is the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA),” Lilly said. “For millions of Chicagoans, these lines are more than just routes—they’re a lifeline that helps them get to work, doctor’s appointments, the grocery store, and keeps our city’s economy moving.”

Senate Bill 2111 represents a major initiative to modernize and enhance Illinois’ public transit system. The bill establishes the Northern Illinois Transit Authority (NITA), a new agency aimed at making transit simpler, more efficient, and better connected throughout the region. NITA will unify the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Pace, and Metra into a single system to improve service for riders. Additionally, it will assume responsibility for regional planning from the current Regional Transit Authority (RTA), setting standards for service, fares, and long-term investments, while promoting greater accountability and transparency.

“Our efforts to deliver safe, reliable, and affordable transportation statewide have finally paid off after several days of meeting with stakeholders to find a solution that works for everyone,” Lilly said. “It was worth every minute because the well-being of everyone in the state depends on each person, no matter their background, being able to reach the places that support their livelihood.”
