SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Lilian Jiménez, D-Chicago, joined her colleagues for a press conference in Springfield this week to rally support for communities and families affected by federal immigration raids.
“Every day in my community someone is kidnapped by masked perpetrators. Every day, the moms and families in my community come to me asking ‘What can I do to protect my family?’ It hurts me that I can’t comfort them, and tell them that
they will be treated fairly,” Jiménez said. “Families shouldn’t have to avoid picking up their children from school, daycare or a friend’s house, because they could be beaten, bloodied and dragged out of their car. If we stay silent today, many more of those we call friends, family and neighbors will be targeted by this lawless administration.”
Jiménez was joined by several Chicago-area representatives to bring to light the stories from their districts. Many highlighted how “Operation Midway Blitz” has instilled fear in Black and Brown families regardless of citizenship status and violated peoples’ constitutional rights.
“We come here daily, because there is always something that we can do to protect our communities and the people who call it home,” Jiménez said. “We are examining every legislative tool available to protect parents of children in daycare, those in emergency and hospital care and more.”
