AURORA, Ill. – On Wednesday, state Rep. Barbara Hernandez, D-Aurora, put her support behind a resolution condemning infringement on due process and racial profiling that has run rampant in local Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations. House Resolution 504 explicitly calls out Donald Trump’s encouragement of racial profiling policies, ICE’s violent tactics-including the use of chemical munitions and illegal search and seizures, and the disregard for due process protections cited in the constitution.
“When we consider the legacy of this time in our community’s history, images of masked ICE officers storming into homes, laying in wait outside of churches and terrifying kids in schools will be at its heart,” Hernandez said. “These dangerous, destructive and often illegal assaults on Latinos have forced so many families to try and pick up the pieces of broken lives.
“However, we will be also able to look at the widespread nonviolent resistance to these attacks as proud moments for our community. Peacefully exercising our constitutional rights, even as oppressors and an out-of-control president treat us like violent threats, is the most potent and lasting rebuke to ICE activity we could ever offer. Again, I condemn ICE’s actions, but I have never been more proud to be a part of this community.”
