CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – In response to the Trump administration threatening SNAP benefits for more than 360,000 Illinoisans, state Rep. Carol Ammons, D-Urbana, is hosting an emergency briefing this Friday with state Sen. Paul Faraci, D-Champaign, for residents to learn more about the federal cuts taking effect in November.
“Close to two million Illinoisans depend on SNAP benefits on top of the hundreds of local businesses who rely on these patrons to keep their doors open in the most rural to underserved, urban communities” said Ammons. “These detrimental cuts mean less children going to school with breakfast in their bellies, less families having affordable, healthy groceries in the refrigerator, and more seniors having to spend their hard earned savings just to put a meal on the table. Trump has fundamentally left so many of our modest and low-income families who depend on meal assistance behind— the people he promised to protect.”
The virtual briefing will take place this Friday, October 10 on Zoom from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The webinar will be led by the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Partners and advocates from the Champaign County Health Care Consumers, Eastern Illinois Foodbank and First Followers will be available to answer questions.
Those interested in registering can access the meeting’s information here.
“It’s unfortunate that we have to navigate another broken promise from the Trump administration, but here in Illinois, we will not waver,” said Ammons. “We’ve been working toward a more responsible and compassionate Illinois—because it’s clear the decisions made in Washington are neither.”
