CHICAGO – State Rep. Yolonda Morris, D-Chicago, is proud to announce over $500,000 in grant funding secured for organizations in her district that will expand life-changing services, ultimately restoring hope, building confidence, and helping communities thrive.
“This is about more than dollars. It’s about dignity,” Morris said. “Everyone no matter where they come from deserves a real chance to grow, to learn, and to build a better future. These programs give people that chance and when we invest in people, entire communities rise with them.”
The funding, awarded by Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias’ office through Library and Literacy Grants, will support a range of organizations providing essential education and support services:
Literacy Chicago – $104,000
Safer Foundation/Pace Institute – $61,364
The Learning Center/House of Corrections – $78,000
University of Illinois-Chicago – $51,955
scaleLIT – $42,950
Illinois Library Association – $110,000
The Chicago Lighthouse – $89,180
These grants will empower adults who struggle with reading, math, or English to build foundational skills and provide access to vital resources for individuals with visual impairments.
“Our state budget reflects our values, and this year we made it clear: we believe in investing in people,” Morris said. “These grants open doors to better jobs, stronger families, and safer neighborhoods. I’m proud to stand with those doing the work to lift others up and I’ll keep fighting to make sure they have the support they need.”
