SPRINGFIELD, Ill – State Rep. Sonya Harper, D-Chicago, will continue supporting a sustainable and equitable future in Illinois and beyond as the Vice-Chair of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Natural Resources, Energy, and Environment Standing Committee.

“Sustainable development is crucial, not just for the present but for future generations because it has long term social, health, and economic benefits,” Harper said. “Natural resources, renewable energy, and a clean environment are crucial for sustainable development because all three work together to achieve sustainability.”

NCSL’s Natural Resources, Energy, and Environment Standing Committee is in charge of defending states’ interests in Washington’s decisions on anything related to agriculture and wastewater, while providing legislators with a platform to learn from the accomplishments and shortcomings of other states.

Harper was given the nod because of her willingness to be at the forefront of issues related to protecting the environment, her proven track record as Chair of the Illinois House Agriculture and Conservation Committee, and her involvement on the NCSL Agriculture Task Force.

“I look forward to listening, advocating for, and being involved in the decision-making process as it pertains to ensuring a sustainable future for our children and our children’s children,” Harper said. “Together, we will make sure that all ideas are brought to the table so we can continue to make informed decisions.”
