ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – A measure to expand eligibility for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to more seniors championed by state Rep. Grasse, D- Arlington Heights, will become available to Illinois households starting Oct. 1.
“The cost of living is continuing to rise across the country which is putting pressure on communities here in Illinois,” Grasse said. “Fixed income seniors are particularly vulnerable, and this bill would help protect them by assisting with home energy costs.”
House Bill 1867 intended to adjust the maximum income limitation for LIHEAP assistance annually at the same rate as future Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefit increases. Additionally, it would’ve raised the eligibility to no more than 150% the federal poverty level or 60% the state median income. The legislation was included in this year’s budget, following negotiations.
“The ability to keep the lights on and stay warm during our harsh winters should be a basic right for every Illinoisian,” said Grasse. “Our seniors deserve this right just as much as anyone else, and this bill ensures that this right is protected. It protects their hard-earned savings as essential services continue to skyrocket, allowing seniors to live a life they deserve.”
