EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — Following the announcement by Nippon Steel that the Granite City works will no longer receive steel slabs to work with by October, state Rep. Katie Stuart, D- Edwardsville, issued the following statement:

“Metro East workers deserve better than for their employers to turn their backs on them, but once again, they have been left behind by policies and decisions that fail to reflect their basic dignity and critical skills.

“Washington has broken its promises to Metro East workers again and again for decades—and this is just the latest example.

“I stand with our workers, their representatives and our community in solidarity as we move forward. It’s clear we can’t rely on the administration in Washington for solutions, so we’ll have to find them ourselves.

“I’m committed to that mission. These workers and their families are both seen and heard. I see them, I hear them, and I won’t stop working every day to get back the justice and stability this decision has robbed them of.”
