CICERO, Ill. – A measure to expand eligibility for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to more seniors championed by state Rep. Elizabeth 'Lisa' Hernandez, D- Cicero, will become available to Illinois households starting Oct. 1.
“Seniors on fixed incomes are being asked to pay for more, with less benefits; it’s unjust and doesn’t honor the lifelong commitment they’ve made to our communities,” Hernandez said. “I worked diligently in the most recent legislative session to make sure seniors don’t sacrifice their retirement earnings to keep their energy bill benefits. This measure would raise the income eligibility threshold, tie benefits to cost of living adjustments and ensure more seniors can live comfortably in the homes they’ve spent their lives in.
Hernandez’s House Bill 1867 intended to adjust the maximum income limitation for LIHEAP assistance annually at the same rate as future Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefit increases. Additionally, it would’ve raised the eligibility to no more than 150% the federal poverty level or 60% the state median income. Hernandez’s legislation was included in this year’s budget, following negotiations.
“I am eternally grateful to the dedicated advocates who helped advance this measure and to the General Assembly and the governor for joining us in this effort,” Hernandez said. “This is going to make a real, tangible difference in people’s lives, and it’s proof that Springfield is taking conscious, responsible action to make Illinois more affordable.”
