RICHTON PARK, Ill. – State Rep. Anthony DeLuca, D-Chicago Heights, recently welcomed Illinois Municipal League (IML) Executive Director Brad Cole and local elected officials to discuss ways the state can reform its broken property tax system and better address important issues facing our communities – including better support for public safety and a restoration of the Local Government Distributive Fund (LGDF).
“This summit was an opportunity to bring local elected officials together to share ideas and discuss ways we can move Illinois in a better direction forward,” DeLuca said. “Local families rightfully expect better public safety. They expect a fair and responsible property tax system that can deliver real relief. They expect greater partnership from Springfield on local issues that can improve their wellbeing. These are commonsense resident priorities, and we must stand together as a unified voice to direct needed change.”
DeLuca convened the meeting at Southland College Prep Charter High School in Richton Park where he provided an update on his legislative efforts in Springfield. As a staunch advocate for property tax relief, DeLuca earned an appointment this year to the House’s Property Tax Working Group, an active initiative that continues to consider proposals from DeLuca and others.
Public safety was another focus for the meeting, and DeLuca underscored his support for greater resources for law enforcement so that they can do their jobs safely and effectively.
A longtime advocate for increased LGDF funding for communities, DeLuca emphasized his continued efforts to raise the percentage local governments receive back from the state. Such changes would bring spending decisions to a government level closer to residents, have a greater impact on day-to-day lives and encourage greater stewardship with tax dollars.
“This meeting involved a great deal of thoughtful collaboration on how we can best advocate for change on the state level,” DeLuca said. “It doesn’t matter to me where an idea comes from, I will always fight for good, commonsense solutions that can improve the lives of our local families.”
