SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Janet Yang Rohr, D-Naperville, backed a property tax reform package on Saturday to slash bureaucratic red tape, help seniors save on their property taxes and make government more efficient.
“My 41st District families see costs going up and are justifiably worried about their kids having a better future. I moved swiftly to make sure Springfield's legislative agenda reflected the urgency of this moment.”
Yang Rohr took action to raise the income threshold for the Low-Income Senior Citizen Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption and tie benefits to the cost of living. The legislative package also cracked down on land developers holding vacant lots hostage for tax breaks and created an easier process for those with delinquent tax bills to pay them off, among other critical changes (Senate Bill 2156).
“Funding the vital programs people depend on cannot come at the expense of the peace of mind of taxpayers and seniors living on fixed incomes. Our property tax package takes bold, effective steps towards easing a burden borne by Illinoisans for far too long. This package is not the end, and I am committed to continuing these bipartisan, compassionate initiatives.
“While our state budget, legislative agenda and property tax reform efforts have concluded for this year, the work of positioning Illinois for continued success remains. Springfield can and must position our economy for growth, lower costs for families and make the American Dream attainable for more. I am dedicated to advocating for our community on these and other issues at every step of the way.”
