SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – As the spring legislative session wrapped up Saturday, state Rep. Dave Vella, D-Rockford, backed a balanced budget plan that cuts government bureaucracy in order to strengthen investment in local schools, support public safety and better prepare Illinois to address economic uncertainty caused by Washington politicians.
“Residents expect results, but too often they see extreme politicians looking to create problems instead of solving them,” Vella said. “This has been a uniquely challenging budgeting season, with economic projections varying week to week due to unstable Washington decisions regarding tariffs and other critical funding that impacts families. The budget package I supported is a responsible plan that reflects the concerns of families, carefully manages resources and puts us in a better position to tackle challenges as they arise.”
The Vella-supported budget pushes for greater efficiency and includes more than $190 million in state government administration cuts. Savings from cuts to red tape will go toward support for classrooms, healthcare and other family priorities. The measure also anticipates future uncertainty caused by Washington, and includes reserve funds that can be utilized to address contingencies as needed.
As chair of the Illinois House International Relations, Tourism and Trade Committee, Vella this session led discussions highlighting the multi-billion-dollar impact a trade war would have on Illinois businesses and consumers. He also backed plans to support manufacturing, strengthen prevailing wage rules and expand access to affordable prescription drugs.
“Challenges remain, but our work in the House is not going to stop,” Vella said. “I know how hard people in our community work, and I’m not going to stop fighting for a brighter future. Let’s keep moving forward.”
