SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — State Rep. Katie Stuart, D-Edwardsville, backed a new state budget Saturday that reduces the size of government bureaucracy and further invests in classrooms across the state.
“Our budget is a reflection of the compassionate and responsible approach we have taken to the issues facing working families,” said Stuart. “Although the harmful policies of Washington have complicated this year’s drafting, I’m proud to support a budget that protects critical services that Illinoisans depend on.”
The Stuart-backed plan includes hundreds of millions in new efficiencies, including a $193 million cut to state administrative bureaucracy that will better assist the state in increasing funding for education, healthcare and other family priorities. In anticipation of uncertainty caused by Washington, the measure includes reserve funds intended to cover short-term emergencies and revenue shortfalls if necessary.
Support for children and education was a priority for Stuart, who has served as a teacher at the elementary, high school and college level.
“Ensuring every student has the resources they need to excel in and out of the classroom is key to preparing young Illinoisans for a bright future,” said Stuart. “Our budget continues to support critical afterschool programs and allocates over $300 million for public schools across the state, providing resources and support to every child and their classroom. Education funding is essential for the long- term health of our state.”
Stuart also passed critical legislation this session that creates a direct admissions program to public universities and community colleges in Illinois, easing the college application process for high school seniors and community college students (House Bill 3522). Supporting those who pursue higher education, Stuart backed a bill that empowers student loan borrowers to consolidate their loans into one loan with one low interest rate (House Bill 1430).
“Challenges remain, but I’m optimistic we can work together to build a stronger Illinois,” said Stuart. “Let’s continue to work toward a brighter future for all.”
