SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Through her support for a fiscally responsible, balanced budget, state Rep. Sue Scherer, D-Decatur, is ensuring that working families in Central Illinois continue to receive the services and other critical resources they need.

“While the Trump Administration has been busy callously sowing chaos in communities across the country by threatening to hold hostage taxpayer funds that have already been earmarked for education, healthcare, infrastructure projects and more, we have been laser-focused on mitigating disruptions to the lives of our working families,” said Scherer. “In Illinois we lift up our families, not tear them down, and bolster essential services, not strip them away.”

Scherer voted for Senate Bill 2510, which makes up the state’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The budget is both compassionate and fiscally responsible. The budget saves $193 million in government spending by making state agencies more efficient without resorting to firing critical workers and cutting services to those who need them the most. In addition, lawmakers have also been able to create the Budget Reserve Immediate Disbursement and Government Efficiency (BRIDGE) to ensure that the state’s mission to uplift the lives of working families continues even if the Trump Administration disrupts the flow of Illinois’ taxpayer funds to the state.

“This budget is a testament to House Democrats’ vision of a state that can have enough heart to uplift its communities, and the enduring focus to do it with fiscal discipline,” said Scherer. “I pushed for targeted cuts to duplicative spending on government administration so we could build up a better school system and expand Illinois hospitals and medical clinics to underserved areas. Donald Trump is committed to making life more expensive for everyday American families with misguided policies such as poorly conceptualized tariffs that will raise the price of consumer goods. However, Illinois is prepared to stand up, fight back and continue to deliver for our working families.”
