SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Nabeela Syed, D-Inverness, condemned the proposed sweeping cuts to Medicaid and other healthcare assistance measures to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy with her support of a formal resolution opposing these cuts and calling on the United States Senate to immediately table the measure.
“Losing Medicaid would force millions of people to ration lifesaving prescription drugs, skip regular doctor visits, and take on huge debt to pay for vital surgeries; all to fund massive tax cuts for the very wealthy,” Syed said. “I have been proud to fight every day for more affordable healthcare in Illinois, and I will continue that fight. However, the federal government seems determined to take steps that will curtail healthcare access and result in preventable deaths in Illinois and every other state across the country.”
Syed has made affordable healthcare her chief issue during her time in the House of Representatives. She put her support behind House Resolution 391, which condemns the new federal budget that will curtail or cut healthcare coverage for millions of Americans. It also calls on the U.S. Senate to table this bill and pursue reforms similar to Illinois’ Healthcare Protection Act.
“Slashing healthcare insurance to this extent will create a crisis,” Syed said. “Beyond the resulting pain and loss of life, these cuts will drive up expenses for working families and force new and greater economic burdens for millions of low-income Americans. On behalf of our community, I’m committed to fighting these effects, even if our federal government is rejecting that cause.”
