SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Nicolle Grasse, D-Arlington Heights, condemned the Trump Administration’s proposed $1 trillion in Medicaid and other health services cuts — estimated to affect over 8.6 million Americans — by leading a formal House resolution Thursday calling on the United States Senate to immediately table the proposal.
“Having served over thirty years as a hospice chaplain, I’ve devoted my career to supporting the most vulnerable among us. I’ve seen firsthand the transformative impact of programs like Medicaid on people’s lives, but I’ve also seen firsthand the hardships faced by families pre- Medicaid’s existence. Too many of the people I sat with at their bedside lost their lives uncomfortably, and tragically, simply because basic care was unaffordable or inaccessible to these individuals and families,” said Grasse. “I am absolutely devastated at the thought of abandoning millions of our people — newborns to great grandmas — due to Trump’s priorities of carving out basic healthcare for low-income families, seniors, and those with disabilities in order to fund tax breaks for the one-percent.”
Grasse has passed a series of pro-public health measures this Spring session advocating for patient care, addressing common patient obstacles and improving the state of hospice and palliative services in Illinois. Grasse led House Resolution 391 to criticize the federal budget framework that will lessen or completely erase healthcare coverage for millions of Americans, including close to 500,000 Illinois residents alone. The resolution instead recommends the U.S. Senate to pursue reforms similar to Illinois’ landmark Healthcare Protection Act signed into law last year, prioritizing affordable and accessible care.
House Resolution 391 passed favorably on the House floor.
