SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Safe Gun Storage Act, a measure backed by state Rep. Nabeela Syed, D-Inverness, will improve public safety by requiring firearm owners to securely store their guns and inform law enforcement if they are lost or stolen.

“The vast majority of gun owners are safe and responsible with their guns, and this measure is designed to make sure that more people live up to that example,” Syed said. “Promoting public safety in our community a priority for me, and ensuring safe storage of firearms is a big step in that direction.”

Syed is building on her record of pro-public safety action by supporting Senate Bill 8, which creates the Safe Gun Storage Act. The act makes a number of changes, including new prohibitions on storing firearms in areas where minors or at-risk people could easily gain access to them, requirements to report missing or stolen guns and requirements that gun dealers check firearms’ serial numbers on an online database to ensure they have not been reported missing or stolen.

“This is commonsense reform that can make a major impact on preventable deaths in this state,” Syed said. “I was glad to work with my colleagues to advance practical and equitable approaches to pushing back against the epidemic of gun violence that has been hurting millions of Illinoisans.”
