SPRINGFIELD, Ill – The Illinois House this week passed Senate Bill 405 which amends the School Code to provide school counseling services in public schools, regardless of a student’s citizenship status. The bill, which is led by Sen. Adriane Johnson and Rep. Abdelnasser Rashid, now returns to the Senate on concurrence.

SB0405 affirms the State’s commitment to educational equity. With this amendment, school counseling services are now required to support every student equally.

“No child should ever feel unseen or unsupported in our schools because of their or their family’s citizenship status,” said Rep. Abdelnasser Rashid. “This bill is about dignity, equality, and ensuring every student has access to the resources they need to thrive. It is vital that we meet the needs of our immigrant student population, especially at a time when they are under attack by the unlawful and unconstitutional actions of the Trump administration.”
