EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — State Rep. Katie Stuart, D-Edwardsville, issued the following statement following reports that the Environmental Bureau of the office of Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul has filed a complaint against the operators of the Roxana Landfill, which has been at the center of a long-running dispute over mismanagement and the resulting impact on the local community.
“Everyone has the right to expect businesses which share their community to be respectful of the families that live around them and to obey the law. Since at least 2019, Roxana Landfill—a company chartered and headquartered in Delaware—has not met either of those expectations.
“Members of the local community have tried for years without success to hold Roxana accountable, but local officials only dragged their feet and engaged in half-measures. When I was made aware of this issue, I directed my staff to work with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and the Illinois Attorney General’s Office to bring serious engagement to this problem.
“Now that the Attorney General’s office is involved, we can look forward to a positive resolution to this longstanding and pervasive issue. Accountability may have taken too long in this case, but I’m glad to see forward momentum. My staff and I remain available to assist Metro East families with issues related to this situation or a whole host of others.”
