SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Mary Beth Canty, D-Arlington Heights, is fighting to rein in the rising cost of housing by passing a new bill cracking down on hidden ‘move-in fees’ added by landlords.
“Unnecessary roadblocks that make moving more expensive restrict the basic freedom to affordable housing for people in our community, and eliminating these financial obstacles is a priority for me,” Canty said. “This measure should put a stop to a gratuitous fee that is responsible for working people needlessly losing millions of dollars.”
Canty has prioritized efforts to crack down on high costs of living for working people in her community and House Bill 3564 is another step in that direction. The bill prohibits so-called ‘move-in fees,’ or other unnecessary expenses landlords charge at the time a lessor takes possession of a property.
“Illinois’ approach to lowering the cost of living needs to be comprehensive. Whether it’s housing, healthcare, groceries, education or other essential services, millions of people depend on affording it,” Canty said. “Cutting fees associated attached to moving is a good step, but I’ll continue to take a hard look at other places we can make improvements.”
