CHICAGO – State Rep. La Shawn K. Ford, D-Chicago, joined students, educators and university officials Monday to encourage leaders in Washington to stand up for higher education and avoid devastating cuts that will erode opportunities for learners.
“Federal support for higher education can often be the difference whether or not a family can afford college,” Ford said. “But right now, there is unprecedented instability in Washington when it comes to student aid and higher education funding. Any significant cuts will disproportionately impact low- and middle-income families, and further strain the ability of Illinois to properly support our institutions.”
Ford, who serves as the House Appropriations-Higher Education Committee Chair, joined higher education representatives to discuss what is at stake and further urged congressional leaders to take action in support of Illinois’ institutions and programs. Recently, the governor’s office highlighted potential risks from the planned dismantling of the U.S. Department of Education, including possible cuts to Pell Grants and student loan programs. Last year, more than 225,000 low-income Illinois students were awarded over $1 billion in Pell Grants to assist with educational expenses.
“Having a strong higher education system is critical for the health of our state and country,” Ford said. “Decisions today in Washington aren’t just about current students; they’re about investing in the future of our economy and giving people of all backgrounds an opportunity to succeed. Let’s choose the responsible path forward.”
Attendees for Monday’s press conference included representatives from Chicago State University, Northeastern Illinois University, Northern Illinois University, University of Illinois-Chicago, Governors State University, Illinois Math and Science Academy, Partnership for College Completion, Women Employed, Young Invincibles, Illinois Federation of Teachers, Latino Policy Forum, Advance Illinois, It Takes A Village Family of Schools, Advance Illinois, Hope Chicago, Chicago Public Schools and Alternative Schools Network.
