SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – As budget discussions begin, state Rep. La Shawn K. Ford, D-Chicago, is expressing encouragement by the governor’s introduced higher education spending plan and is urging Springfield to take further action to support and expand college opportunities for residents.

“At first look, I am encouraged by the governor’s proposal as it relates to higher education,” Ford said, “To be clear, the governor’s proposal is just a starting point of discussion, but I am glad to see some increases and no cuts. Higher education is one of the best areas we can and should make significant investments in. Not only does it open doors of opportunity for residents in every community, it also has a strong, proven track record of providing long-term economic contributions to our state.”

Introduced Wednesday, Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s proposed budget includes a 3% operational increase for public universities and community colleges. It also looks to help more students attend college by increasing funding for the Monetary Award Program (MAP). Funding for AIM High and Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois is kept level at existing support.

As chair of the House-Appropriations Higher Education Committee, Ford will lead House discussions on higher education funding.

“I’m looking forward to the process of working with our universities, colleges and other grantees to push for efficiency and ways we can maximize our resources,” Ford said. “Let’s work together to secure strong, effective investments that will deliver real results for the people of Illinois.”
