BOLINGBROOK, Ill. – State Rep. Dagmara “Dee” Avelar, D-Bolingbrook, issued the following statement Wednesday after Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s annual budget address:

“The governor’s address highlights a responsible budget that protects key services, resources, and daily expenses our communities need to survive. As we begin crafting this new state budget, the focus remains to have a balanced budget that reduces the cost of living, inflation, and education and cuts down on taxes.

“This past year, we have taken steps to address the pressures on working families. We passed the Healthcare Protection Act, making insurance better and more affordable for all people. We created the Child Tax Credit and eliminated the grocery tax, which are going to help families make ends meet. The goal is to continue to create legislation that helps working families and protects our communities, especially during these challenging and uncertain times created by Washington.

“The Trump administration has allowed billionaires and the wealthy to make financial decisions that backtrack our progress as a country, but also has negatively impacted our state and minority communities. This budget cycle, Illinois will continue to move forward in a better direction even if Washington pulls in the other direction. This is one step in a long process, but I am ready to go through the budget and create a smart, responsible plan that will help our communities. Our work is nowhere close to being done.”
