SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Janet Yang Rohr, D-Naperville, is partnering with Illinois school districts to advance legislation cutting response times for emergencies on school campuses, ensuring that personnel can more quickly mobilize resources during natural disasters, mass shootings and other unforeseen events.
“How quickly we get emergency personnel to developing situations involving our children and their schools makes all the difference when it comes to saving lives,” Yang Rohr said. “This legislation will help quicken response times for law enforcement, firefighters and paramedics when the unthinkable becomes the reality. The advocates and I are dedicating this legislation to Alyssa Alhadeff, a high school student who passed away during the Parkland school shooting in 2017; by telling her story, honoring her life and passing this bill, we can prevent more loss of life in our schools.”
Yang Rohr’s House Bill 1072 would create a mobile panic alert system connecting classrooms directly to emergency and 911 first responders. These ‘Alyssa’s Alert’ systems are named after Alyssa Alhadeff, a victim of the Marjorie Stoneman Douglass school shooting in Parkland, Fla. in 2017. Texas, New York and Florida are among several other states who have implemented similar threat response systems.
