NEW YORK – Illinois-based health food company Lifeway was honored with ringing the NASDAQ closing bell Monday, and state Rep. La Shawn K. Ford, D-Chicago, joined local officials in recognizing the kefir producer as it continues to invest in Chicagoland.

“Lifeway Foods is a local success story that continues to invest in our community, generate jobs and drive economic development,” Ford said. “Congratulations to Julie Smolyansky, her team and every local worker who were recognized. I wish them continued success and growth.”

Lifeway Foods began in 1986 in the Skokie home basement of immigrants Michael and Ludmila Smolyansky, who began making kefir when they recognized the popular Eastern European cultured dairy drink was not sold in the United States. Now led by Julie Smolyansky, the company has significantly grown over the past four decades and continues to be an active member in the local business and philanthropic community.

Ford is recognizing Lifeway Foods with House Resolution 57, which highlights the company’s Illinois roots and underscores its economic importance.
