SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. La Shawn K. Ford, D-Chicago, issued a strong statement today condemning the recent pardons granted to individuals involved in the January 6th insurrection describing it as “serious misstep that undermines justice and accountability in America.” Ford highlighted the stark contrast between these pardons and the experiences of countless Americans who spend years and sometimes lifetimes seeking justice.

“For decades, millions of Americans have fought tirelessly to clear their names, often spending thousands of dollars and navigating endless bureaucratic hurdles,” Ford said. “I personally know Mr. Howard Medley, a 98-year-old World War II veteran, who has spent decades seeking justice to clear his name. His story represents the struggles many face who, despite their service and contributions, are denied fairness in a flawed system.”

Ford emphasized the wider implications of the pardons, which he argues trivialize the sacrifices made by law-abiding citizens and undermine trust in democratic institutions.

“This pardon is not just a failure of justice—it’s a betrayal of the very fabric of our democracy,” Ford stated. “It sends a chilling message that political loyalty can override accountability for violent actions, while countless reformed individuals and those wrongfully convicted are left without resolution or dignity.”

Ford urged for a renewed commitment to a just and equitable justice system.

“Justice must be blind, fair, and steadfast. It should not be a privilege reserved for those with political connections,” Ford added. “We must continue advocating for a system that upholds our democratic ideals and serves all citizens equally.”

Ford concluded by reaffirming his commitment to supporting those who seek true justice and called for systemic reforms to ensure fairness for all Americans. He expressed hope that this action would create opportunities for those who genuinely deserve consideration for a clean slate.

Ford supported House Resolution 118, which passed the Illinois House Wednesday. For more information, please contact RepFord@LaShawnFord.com
