CHICAGO – Recognized for her commitment to overcoming Illinois’ high housing costs, state Rep. Lilian Jiménez, D-Chicago, will serve as Chair of the Housing Committee, putting her in a position to better advance effective, needed solutions. Jiménez released the following statement:

“I am honored to serve as the Chair of the House Housing Committee, as both Speaker Welch and I understand the urgent need for bold, transformative action to address the housing crisis,” Jiménez said. “Skyrocketing housing costs threaten the stability and future of our working families and longtime homeowners. While last year’s budget added thousands of units to our housing stock, we must go further. This year, our focus must be on breaking down barriers for first-time homebuyers, fostering an inclusive and supportive housing market, and prioritizing policies that deliver real, lasting stability for our communities.”

As Chair, Jiménez will focus on smart fiscal policymaking to deliver real change for homeowners and renters.

She will champion legislation aimed at eliminating housing barriers for working families, including addressing unfair rent increases, promoting transparency in rental practices, and reducing the financial burdens of securing housing. Jiménez is committed to ensuring that everyone has access to stable and affordable housing by supporting policies that prioritize fairness and opportunity in the housing market.

“We live in unprecedented times, and the moneyed forces working against us are powerful,” Jiménez said. “I believe a brighter future is never far out of reach. I also believe in an Illinois that embraces policies that are not just smart, but compassionate to its people. Our families deserve advocates and legislation that reflects these ideals, and I plan on doing just that in my term as Chair.”
