SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – As a new General Assembly was sworn in Wednesday, state Rep. Marti Deuter, D-Elmhurst, pledged to support working families by investing in education, strengthening public safety and expanding economic opportunity.

“When I listen to people on their porch or at community events, it’s clear to me that Illinois can do a better job to address challenges facing families,” Deuter said. “Residents don’t care about political games; they expect consensus building and real results. I’m excited to have the opportunity to go to Springfield and fight to make our streets safer, lower costs and improve opportunities for our children.”

Deuter joins the Illinois House of Representatives after 11 years serving as a member of the Elmhurst City Council, where she was heavily involved in work regarding public safety, economic development and financial management. She also worked for Bridge Communities, a Glen Ellyn-based nonprofit that provides housing and supportive services to families transitioning out of homelessness.

Focused on policymaking, Deuter studied social work in college and initially came to Illinois from Ohio to attend the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration. Before moving to Elmhurst, she worked for the City of Chicago for eight years where she managed the city’s local, state and federal legislative agendas related to housing.

“Illinois faces serious financial challenges, which underscores the importance of taking a balanced and responsible path forward,” Deuter said. “It’s critical that we pursue a human-centered approach that protects fundamental rights, targets gun violence and prioritizes the issues facing families throughout our state.

“It is an incredible honor and privilege to serve as a state representative, and I’m thankful for the support I have received from family, colleagues and community members who have brought me to this moment,” Deuter said. “I’m excited for the work ahead.”
