SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Lilian Jiménez, D-Chicago, took the oath of office on Wednesday, issuing a strong statement urging continued efforts to make affordable housing a reality in Illinois:

“With the start of a new General Assembly, we have the opportunity to stand in full solidarity with the working families of this state. As the country at large chooses to put profits over people, Illinois must set the example for not only effective resistance, but also for spirited cooperation where we can. As a two-term representative, I am ready to fight for the communities under threat from an oppositional presidency and work together where we can find common ground.

“My life has been dedicated to my community. The daughter of an undocumented mother and Puerto Rican father, I know the struggle many face and the danger they still feel. Being an American is both a great privilege, and a great responsibility. I owe it not only to my family who came to this country and from the beautiful island of Puerto Rico to continue opening doors of opportunity. This good, joyful work has taken me far, and has led me to the halls of government.

“I have championed fair labor standards for all, helped resettle new immigrants, and railed against injustice in the courtroom. In my first term, I helped create better pay transparency, pass legislation to create fairer practices in obtaining and maintaining quality healthcare, and fought for protections for renters who speak out against million dollar housing companies.

“As a state, we are operating in uncertain times. Many in our communities feel threatened by anti-immigrant attacks and campaign promises at the federal level. I will do everything in my power to push back on these very real threats and continue our status as a sanctuary for those seeking a better life. We cannot let the promise of America be overtaken by extremist ideologues.

“There is more work to be done, and the road to a better future will not be easy. However, I am empowered by the overwhelming support of my friends, family and community who helped me return to Springfield for the second time. Let’s get to work together.”
