CHICAGO – State Rep. Lilian Jiménez, D-Chicago, is highlighting three community organizations opening their doors to local students in need of healthy meals during Chicago Public Schools’ winter break through the city’s Safe Haven Program. Meals will be available Dec. 23, 26, 27, 30 and Jan. 2 and 3.

“Food insecurity affects too many of our neighborhood kids, especially during the summer and winter breaks when they can’t depend on a cafeteria lunch to get them through the day,” Jiménez said. “Kids shouldn’t be going hungry, especially during such a joyous and festive time, so I hope local families take advantage of this opportunity. Safe Haven Programs are not just for meals, I also encourage parents to consider how these and other sites can help keep their kids on track year after year.”

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) operates the Safe Haven Program which provides students with additional learning opportunities, stronger mentor partnerships and academic advancement resources. During the winter break, several nonprofit and faith based organizations are partnering with CPS to provide healthy meals to disadvantaged students, combating food insecurity often experienced outside school boundaries.
