AURORA, Ill. – State Rep. Barbara Hernandez, D-Aurora, is recommending people in the local community nominate their school board members for the Thomas Lay Burroughs Award, which
annually recognizes extraordinary service on a local board of education.

“The contributions school board members make to Illinois kids’ educations are substantial and deserve recognition,” Hernandez said. “Building a better education system for our community is a comprehensive process that requires informed leadership from our school board. I hope everyone in Aurora who has seen a school board member distinguishing themselves with good work nominates them for the Thomas Lay Burroughs Award to help promote a too often overlooked key to our school system.”

The Thomas Lay Burroughs Award was named for the late State Board of Education Chairman Tom Burroughs, this annual award recognizes extraordinary service from members on a local board of education. It typically goes to those who have demonstrated substantive leadership helping guide their schools towards higher quality educational achievement.
