BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – State Rep. Sharon Chung, D-Bloomington, is recommending people in the local community nominate their school board members for the Thomas Lay Burroughs Award, which annually recognizes extraordinary service on a local board of education.

“School boards play an invaluable role supporting our kids’ educations by providing informed leadership to help local schools close achievement gaps for underserved students, overcome crises and generally promote equitable outcomes for all students,” Chung said. “I encourage every parent who has seen the amazing services our school board members provide their communities to nominate them for this award.”

The Thomas Lay Burroughs Award was named for the late State Board of Education Chairman Tom Burroughs, this annual award recognizes extraordinary service from members on a local board of education. It typically goes to those who have demonstrated substantive leadership helping guide their schools towards higher quality educational achievement.
