Aurora, Ill – A new initiative aimed at providing vital support to disabled veterans and adults with disabilities in the Fox Valley Area area is set to be unveiled at the upcoming Community Friday lunch event. This innovative venture, born from a collaboration between Valley Sheltered Workshop (VSW) and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), represents a significant step forward in addressing the needs of some of our community’s most vulnerable members.

“This collaboration embodies the spirit of our community—coming together to support one another and ensuring that no one is left behind,” said State Representative Stephanie Kifowit. “I am proud to have played a role in connecting these incredible organizations, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact this venture will have on our disabled veterans and adults with disabilities.”

The partnership, facilitated by State Representative Stephanie Kifowit (D-Oswego), has brought together key stakeholders, especially the VFW and VSW, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing meaningful opportunities for adults with disabilities. The project will utilize space at the VFW as a shared workspace, providing much-needed resources and support to adults with disabilities, including disabled veterans. The site will be overseen by a disabled veteran, with additional support staff also comprising disabled veterans, ensuring that the initiative is deeply rooted in the community it serves.

“This initiative is a testament to the power of community and the importance of creating opportunities for those who have served our country and those who face daily challenges due to disabilities,” said Hugo Saltijeral, Executive Director of Valley Sheltered Workshop. “By bringing together disabled veterans and adults with disabilities in a supportive environment, we provide essential resources and foster a sense of purpose and belonging. This program is about recognizing every individual’s value and ensuring that they have the tools and support to thrive.”

“Partnering with Valley Sheltered Workshop to support disabled Veterans and adults with disabilities aligns perfectly with our core values of honoring military service and serving our communities,” said Robert Bailey, Junior Vice Commander of the Department of Illinois VFW. “We are excited about this initiative and committed to ensuring that our Veterans receive the care and opportunities they deserve. Together, we are making a lasting impact.”

The new workspace will be formally unveiled at the Community Friday lunch on August 30, 2024, from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at VSW (325 Main St., Batavia, IL). The event, themed “End of Summer BBQ,” will celebrate Community Beacons—individuals who inspire and illuminate the path for others in the community. The event is sponsored by The Kombrink Team and will feature a special announcement regarding the new venture.
