Scherer Applauds Efforts to Commemorate 1908 Springfield Race Riot

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Sue Scherer, D-Decatur, issued the following statement Monday, encouraging ongoing conversations by the U.S. Department of the Interior about commemorating the 1908 Springfield Race Riot:

“I’m glad that so many Central Illinois voices and so many unique experiences and perspectives are part of this important conversation. Building a brighter future means being honest about the past. We must honor of the lives lost and recognize the neighborhoods shattered during the riot. I want to thank Congresswoman Budzinski and other federal, state, and local leaders for helping to move this conversation forward.”
