GURNEE, Ill. – State Rep. Joyce Mason, D-Gurnee, issued the following response to the sentencing of Illinois Department of Child and Family Services caseworker Carlos Acosta, who, in 2023, was convicted of two counts of child endangerment in connection with the death of 5-year-old A.J. Freund:

“While I recognize that DCFS caseworkers face difficult challenges, and many do great work, those that fail so egregiously and cause such tragic consequences deserve a greater punishment than what Carlos Acosta received. Protecting children from harm is one of the most important roles in Illinois and A.J. Freund didn’t get that support. I will keep him in my heart and continue to work towards ensuring that no other kids are left without sufficient help.”
