SOUTH HOLLAND,IL – State Rep. Thaddeus Jones, D-Calumet City, celebrated the opening of Bowen Harvest by activist group By the Hand, shrinking the dire food insecurity situation impacting the Altgeld Gardens community on Chicago’s South Side.
“Food insecurity is an ever-present issue facing the community, which is why I’m pleased to honor the CPS students working to improve their community,” Jones said. “Bowen Harvest is not only helping those without access to produce, but also educating the young high school students running the compound by teaching business skills like profit and loss, management, and how to deal with food trends.”
Bowen Harvest is a first-of-its-kind, student-run container farm in the Altgeld Gardens neighborhood of Chicago. Over the weekend, the location began providing healthy food access to local families, partnering food banks, and other organizations. The compound is expected to produce over two-thousand pounds of produce per year, the only healthy food source in over three miles.
