VENICE, Ill. – State Rep. Jay Hoffman, D-Swansea, joined students, teachers and local officials Friday for the ceremonial groundbreaking of a new elementary school in Venice.

“It’s great to see shovels in the ground for a new building that’s going to offer a quality, modern learning experience for years to come,” Hoffman said. “The past few years have been difficult for students, but this new school will bring needed stability and will immediately be a centerpiece for the community. I appreciate the support from local leaders, school officials and parents who helped get us to this moment.”

Located at 700 Broadway in Venice, the new building is expected to open in time for the 2025-26 school year. Hoffman helped to secure $26 million in state funding for the project after the previous elementary school building was condemned in 2020 due to safety concerns. Since then, students and teachers have had to use virtual learning and a temporary location in Granite City.
