GRANITE CITY, Ill. – State Rep. Jay Hoffman, D-Swansea, released the following statement Thursday after reports of a settled agreement between United Steelworkers Local 1899 and U.S. Steel to provide two months of back pay for workers laid off in the fall without proper WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) Act notice:
“I’m glad that these workers and their families will receive their back pay, and I still strongly encourage U.S. Steel to chart a better course forward that invests in these highly-skilled workers. This situation has underscored the importance of the WARN Act, and I appreciate the work from United Steelworkers Local 1899 under difficult circumstances to secure what workers were rightfully owed. I want to thank Gov. J.B. Pritzker, the Illinois Department of Labor and Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski for their hard work on this issue.”
