CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Committed to showcasing the important role educational staff play in preparing the next generation, state Rep. Carol Ammons, D-Urbana, is encouraging community members to nominate teachers, staff, and personnel for the Those Who Excel and Teacher of the Year awards through the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).

“My work in Springfield and my Urbana-Champaign community reflects my strong commitment to honoring the hard work, dedication and outstanding contributions of teachers and staff,” Ammons said. “When the nation is turning its back on teachers and undermining the work they do to prepare our young people for the future, it’s important that Illinois double down on our support for these critical members of our community. These awards are just one way we can do right by them.”

ISBE opens applications for the Those Who Excel and Teacher of the Year awards every year to recognize the incredible work of educators and support staff. Nominees are eligible if they fall under one of the following categories: teachers, early career educators, administrators, student support personnel, educational service personnel, community volunteers, and teams. Anyone can nominate an outstanding educator for these awards, but those nominated must complete an application for consideration. Applications for these awards are due Oct. 15.  More information on the application process is available here

Ammons fought hard for better education resources for her community. She supported the state’s fifth balanced budget that fully funds k-12 education, fills teacher and staff vacancies, and expands Illinois’ early childhood education center stock. Ammons also sponsored Senate Bill 2374, enhancing computer science education programs in k-12 schools.

“Educators play a critical role in our communities, helping our young people develop beyond just coursework,” Ammons said. “I highly recommend families who have been impacted by an outstanding teacher or staff member at their local school submit a nomination and show their appreciation. We need to do more to support our educators, but this is a great way everyday Illinoisans can show our gratitude.”
