CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – State Rep. Carol Ammons, D-Urbana will lead the Uniting Our Strengths Women’s Retreat, focused on creating a safe and empowering space for women affected by gun violence on Saturday, July 29, at 10 a.m. at The Church of the Living God, in Champaign.
“Gun violence has cost us innocent lives, shattered families, and created a pervasive sense of fear that hinders the progress and prosperity we all deserve,” Ammons said. “It is time to break this cycle and build a community where our children can grow up without the constant threat of violence.”
The Uniting Our Strengths Women’s Retreat provides a safe and empowering space for women who have been affected by gun violence to heal and grow. This event is free of charge, but space is limited. Prospective attendees are encouraged to register as soon as possible.
Ammons has been at the forefront of multiple efforts to stomp out gun violence across Illinois. She supported an assault weapons ban, aimed at eliminating weapons of war from neighborhood streets (House Bill 5471). She also helped expand legal latitude for gun violence victims to hold gun manufacturers accountable for ad campaigns that have caused real world destruction (House Bill 218).
“This retreat is designed to create a network of support that brings us together in our pain for change, share our experiences, and support one another in our journeys toward healing,” Ammons said. “I encourage those interested to register as soon as possible so that we can embark on the healing journey together. Gun violence in the Black community is a pressing issue that demands our immediate attention, and I believe that together, we can make a difference.”
