PALATINE, Ill. – State Rep. Nabeela Syed, D-Palatine, is calling on private water utility Aqua Illinois to stabilize their infrastructure following a major interruption of water services that forced hundreds in Kildeer and Hawthorn Woods communities to go without water for days.

“For days, hundreds of households in Hawthorn Woods and Kildeer endured the punishing effects of Aqua Illinois’ extended failure to provide water. The company took far too long to mitigate their failure or adequately communicate with the people they failed,” Syed said. “People lived without showers, toilets and clean drinking water. Pregnant women, seniors and other at-risk groups faced a serious public health emergency. Over 20 residents from different neighborhoods came to our district office this morning to share their experiences with Aqua Illinois, their lack of communication, and the personal hardships they’ve experienced as a result of this water service interruption.”

Water Aqua Illinois is a private water utility in the area. On Monday night, a combination of recent drought in the area as well as malfunctioning equipment led to insufficient water pressure to maintain consistent services to all households. Service wasn’t restored for all households for up to four days.

“This is a problem our community should never have had to face. Implementing long-term solutions is vital to preventing further failures,” Syed said. “I will be exploring legislative approaches to put a stop to interruptions like this in all Illinois communities and how we can best support our neighbors here in Hawthorn Woods and Kildeer.”
