CHICAGO — State Rep. Lilian Jiménez, D-Chicago, issued a statement following Thursday’s Supreme Court ruling overturning affirmative action in college admissions.
“I am saddened, but not surprised, by the Supreme Court’s ruling to gut affirmative action policies for college admissions,” Jiménez said. “Black and Brown communities have fought hard for basic protections and opportunities to create a better future for themselves and their families, and this ruling is a slap in the face to that fundamental American ideal. Justices Sotomayor, Brown Jackson and Kagan expressed what we all know to be true: that race has fundamentally impacted our country’s past and the lived experiences of people of color. Today’s ruling undermines our country’s important progress of creating a more compassionate and just society for all. As state representative, I will continue my work to create a more hopeful future for all Illinoisans.”
