BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – State Rep. Sharon Chung, D-Bloomington, is announcing the recent approval of funding for railway improvement projects in Normal, East Peoria and Washington.
“Railroads connect communities across our state, ensure a steady supply chain and provide smooth transit for countless Illinoisans. This much-needed funding is going to strengthen those connections,” Chung said. “Bolstering Illinois’ infrastructure will also result in safer travel, increased tourism and a much-needed injection of revenue for our small businesses. These grants are money well-spent.”
The Illinois Commerce Commission is dispensing grants as part of its Crossing Safety Improvement Program 5-Year Plan to improve streets and railroads across the state with the goal of making them safer and faster by relieving congestion. Grants are specifically focused on building and improving road, highway and rail crossings.
“Infrastructure projects like this are a vital step in preserving public safety and preventing avoidable accidents,” Chung said. “In addition to the positive financial impact of these improvements, they may very well save lives.”
