CHICAGO  – State Rep. Jaime Andrade, D-Chicago, will emphasize electric and autonomous vehicle legislation and help new Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias realize his vision for the office as chair of the House Transportation: Vehicle Safety Committee.

Andrade is excited to welcome and work alongside state Rep. Dave Vella, D-Loves Park, as vice chair. Rep. Vella brings his invaluable experience in the electric vehicle industry to the vice chair position.

Andrade plans to team up with Chairperson Ann Williams, D-Chicago, and the Energy and Environment Committee to coordinate legislation that will support clean energy technologies and business, including electric vehicles.

“As technology advances and the state of our roads and expressways change, government has to keep pace with these changes to keep motorists safe and spur innovation,” Andrade said. “Electric vehicles and autonomous cars pose a challenge to current laws, so we have to not only catch up to these advancements but get in front of them. I am ready to do just that by working with the fellow members of my committee, leading experts, community leaders and technology representatives.”

Andrade has a strong record of passing legislation that keeps pace with current trends in technological innovation and vehicle safety. He passed House Bill 106 which cracked down on catalytic converter thieves by bringing the purchase and sale of these devices under more stringent enforcement.

“I am honored to continue my advocacy for smart and comprehensive tech policy that allows innovations to work for Illinois and keep families safe,” Andrade said. “I look forward to working with the Secretary of State to draft and coordinate legislation for our shared legislative priorities.”
