CHICAGO – State Rep. Edgar Gonzalez Jr., D-Chicago, will work to lift up low-income and minority families locally and across Illinois as chairperson of the Economic Opportunity and Equity Committee.
“With rising costs and shrinking incomes for working families, we as representatives need to focus on ensuring that people can achieve a stable financial future,” Gonzalez said. “Last year’s budget made significant progress in funding programs people rely on most, but we have to do more. As chair, I will work with colleagues, stakeholders and leading financial experts to create legislation that supports our most vulnerable.”
Gonzalez has been a longtime supporter of comprehensive economic legislation. He passed Senate Bill 264 that amended eligibility requirements for energy assistance programs, ensuring families who weren’t previously eligible can receive necessary assistance.
“Safety net programs are a critical way in which Springfield can support Illinois families and get them the help they need,” Gonzalez said. “As chair, I look forward to advancing legislation to fund these programs and imagine new ways we can support communities affected by institutional injustices.”
