CHICAGO – State Rep. Eva-Dina Delgado, D-Chicago, cut the ribbon on a new facility for Belmont Cragin Elementary School, consolidating the schools to one campus to Riis Park.

“The children of Belmont Cragin and the surrounding community deserve a first class education at a first class facility, and I am beyond excited to announce that they will be getting exactly that,” Delgado said. “Students can only succeed if we, as policymakers, education advocates, and most of all teachers, are able to create an environment that supports that goal. These new facilities will ensure that the students of the Northwest Side have everything they need to succeed and compete with their peers across the state.”

Located at the 6100 block of Fullerton Ave., the Belmont Cragin Elementary School was constructed by the Public Building Commission, with the cooperation of the Chicago Park District and the Chicago Public Schools. The Chicago Park District will also deliver a renovated field house in the next 18 months.

The $44 million facility boasts a black box theater, a music room, library, art room and gymnasium. Nestled into Riis Park, students will have access to a state of the art building as well as the surrounding park facilities. The school’s dual language curriculum offers Spanish-language instruction.

“Communities of color often face steep challenges to a full, well funded and comprehensive education that enables them to succeed, and Belmont Cragin is no different,” Delgado said. “We, as a city and a state, are taking a step in the right direction to correct this institutional barrier and set up students, regardless of their neighborhood, for the chance to build a future.”
