NAPERVILLE, Ill. – State Rep. Janet Yang Rohr, D-Naperville, issued the following statement regarding the Protect Illinois Communities Act, critical gun safety legislation that ends the sale of assault rifles, high-capacity magazines, and rapid-fire devices in Illinois:

“Gun violence has touched the lives of families across the state and here in our community,” Yang Rohr said. “Even the safest town lives under the constant fear of knowing a weapon designed for the battlefield could be at a parade, a school, a movie theater, or a church.

“This legislation takes input from gun violence victims, leading experts in firearms and gun safety, law enforcement agencies large and small and creates legislation that saves lives without impacting the rights of lawful gun owners and law-abiding Illinoisans. The weapons of war that maim communities don’t belong on our streets, and neither do high-capacity magazines that add to the lethality. I am proud of the House’s commitment to honoring those lost to gun violence, and I look forward to working with my colleagues on future legislation to enhance gun safety.”
