SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Sharon Chung, D-Bloomington, was inaugurated Wednesday, beginning her effort to provide tax relief, create jobs, rebuild crumbling infrastructure and support women’s rights.

“I am honored that the people of Central Illinois have elected me to represent them. Serving my community as the first Korean American in the Illinois General Assembly is deeply meaningful to me, and I look forward to using this time to create serious change for everyone in our community. As your voice in Springfield, I am dedicated to meet the needs of every constituent. From Bloomington to East Peoria, I am ready to hear your priorities.”

A lifelong Illinois resident, Chung was elected to the McLean County Board in 2018, serving on the Land Use and Development, Health, and Justice Committees. The daughter of Korean immigrants, Chung will be the first Korean American serving in the Illinois General Assembly. As a professional violist, Chung has performed on numerous stages throughout Central Illinois. She lives with her family in Bloomington.

As a new voice in the Capitol, Chung will continue her efforts to promote fiscal responsibility and deliver tax relief. Chung will support infrastructure investment to improve local transportation, create jobs and strengthen Central Illinois’ business community.

“The people of our community were clear on their needs. Vital investments in infrastructure and education fortify our economy in Central Illinois, jumpstart job growth and help build a stronger Illinois for families currently feeling the growing financial burdens of inflation.

Additionally, Chung will prioritize prioritize healthcare access and affordability, and stand up for women’s health and safety.

“We must also must be ready to stand up for the rights of women. Illinois is already a beacon of choice and I intend to expand that. Countless women in other states face growing challenges from extremist leaders, and we need to be here to give those women the assistance they need. I am also determined to hold domestic abusers to account because they don’t get to avoid reprocusions for their terrible crimes.”
