CHICAGO – With many homeowners across the northwest side finding it difficult to cover mortgage payments and other bills, state Rep. Lindsey LaPointe, D-Chicago, is highlighting housing relief programs that are delivering financial relief and accepting applications right now.

“Our seniors on fixed incomes have long lived on tight budgets. In addition, this pandemic and the economic fallout it created have had a devastating impact on even more families trying to make ends meet,” LaPointe said. “Everyone deserves to have an affordable roof over their head, particularly as we approach the winter months. For those who need a little bit of help, there are state and local options they should be aware of.”

Recently, the Illinois Housing Development Authority reopened a relief program designed to help eligible homeowners with up to $30,000 in mortgage assistance. The Illinois Homeowner Assistance Fund, which pays directly to the servicer, taxing body or other approved entity, can help fund past due housing payments and up to three months of prospective mortgage payments.

The program is free and funds do not need to be repaid. Interested residents can review additional information and submit an application at https://www.illinoishousinghelp.org/ through Jan. 31, 2023.

Additionally, qualifying residents who live in Jefferson Park, Irving Park, Belmont Cragin and parts of Portage Park and Dunning may be able to receive up to $5,000 to cover delinquent property taxes through the Northwest Home Equity Assurance Program (NWHEAP). Authorized through legislation backed by LaPointe and other northwest side legislators, the program was developed for homeowners in our area at risk of losing their homes. An application form and additional information can be found at https://nwheap.com/delinquent-tax-program-application/. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until May 2023. Residents can also call NWHEAP at 773-622-0700 to see if they meet applicable criteria.

LaPointe’s office is available to assist residents with questions and connect them with relief providers. Residents can email Info@RepLaPointe.com or call 773-647-1174 for assistance.
